International SEO for US and UK e-commerce brands
Ranking in another country needs more than a currency switch. Search words, delivery promises and site structure differ by market. We plan each market so it ranks for its own searches.
International SEO for e-commerce means choosing a URL structure for each market, implementing hreflang correctly, localizing spelling, currency, shipping and returns, and measuring each country separately. AdCrowd is a Lahore agency. Our cross-border proof is Rahman & Rahman, where UK-focused campaigns raised qualified overseas enquiries 150% in 60 days.
Should you use separate domains, subdomains or subfolders for each market?
There is no universal answer. Google documents all three as workable. The choice depends on budget, brand, legal and technical constraints.
| Option | Example | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Country domain | brand.co.uk | Strongest country signal; clear to users | Separate sites to build, link and maintain |
| Subdomain | uk.brand.com | Easy to separate infrastructure | Often treated more separately than subfolders |
| Subfolder | brand.com/uk/ | Shares authority with the main site; one site to maintain | Needs careful hreflang and consistent templates |
For most growing brands we start from subfolders unless a country domain is already owned or legally needed. We confirm after reviewing your platform and resources.
How does hreflang work for en-US and en-GB?
Hreflang tells Google which language and country version of a page to show to which user. Errors are common. The rules are simple but unforgiving:
- Each page lists itself and every alternate version.
- Alternates must link back (return tags), or the signal can be ignored.
- Use language and region codes such as en-US and en-GB, plus an x-default for unmatched users.
- Annotations can sit in the HTML head, HTTP headers or the XML sitemap. Pick one method and keep it consistent.
- Each URL in the set should return a normal 200 status and be indexable.
We validate hreflang by crawling the whole set, not by spot-checking.
What needs localizing beyond language?
UK and US shoppers both read English, but they search and buy differently. The localization list for each market covers:
- Spelling and vocabulary: "colour" and "trainers" in the UK, "color" and "sneakers" in the US.
- Currency, price format and how tax is displayed.
- Delivery times, shipping cost and returns policy written for that country.
- Payment methods shoppers expect.
- Size, measurement and date formats.
- Customer support hours and contact details.
- Product feeds and Merchant Center settings per country, kept consistent with the site.
These details change conversion as much as ranking. A page that ranks but shows the wrong currency and a two-week delivery estimate wastes the click.
How do you research keywords per market?
We run keyword research separately for each country, using Google Ads Keyword Planner, DataForSEO and Semrush databases set to that market, then map terms to pages by intent. A single translated keyword list misses market-specific terms and competitors. We also look at which sites currently rank in each country, since US and UK results often differ for the same product.
What cross-border results has AdCrowd delivered?
Rahman & Rahman, a Lahore dental clinic, wanted overseas clients, especially UK-based Pakistanis visiting home. The earlier agency's ads lacked geo-targeted relevance and the funnel did not nurture visitors. We rebuilt the funnel with audience segments by location, travel behavior and intent, ad sets aimed at UK cities with large Pakistani populations, retargeting, WhatsApp consultations, and SEO for queries such as "teeth implants in Pakistan for expats".
| Rahman & Rahman metric | Result | Window |
|---|---|---|
| Qualified overseas enquiries (mainly UK-based Pakistanis) | +150% | Within 60 days |
| Cost per lead | Down more than 40% | After retargeting and geo-focused ad sets |
| Click-through rate | Doubled | Audience-specific messaging |
| Organic traffic | +40% | SEO changes showed results within weeks |
This is a services case with a paid and organic mix, not an e-commerce store. We include it because it shows how we research, localize and measure for a foreign audience.
Have you fixed hreflang and bilingual structure before?
Yes. A bilingual brand serving the US and Canada lost rankings after an algorithm update and a migration. Part of the repair was bilingual URL structuring: language-specific URLs and correct hreflang tags so search engines could index each version for its market. Rankings returned in both countries and traffic exceeded pre-update levels within a few months. Read the case study.
How do you measure each market?
We split Search Console and GA4 by country and by language version from the start. Each market gets its own baseline for impressions, clicks, non-branded queries, organic revenue and conversion rate. Mixed totals hide whether the UK is working while the US is not.
What are the most common international SEO mistakes?
- Using automatic redirects by IP address, which can stop Googlebot and users from reaching the right version.
- Translating or copying pages without localizing currency, shipping and returns.
- Hreflang tags that do not point back to each other.
- Pointing all markets at one canonical URL, which tells Google to ignore the others.
- Launching a market before reporting is set up, so there is no baseline.
- Treating the US as one market when delivery, tax and demand differ by state.
Is international SEO right for your brand yet?
- It makes sense when you already ship or plan to ship to that country and have demand evidence.
- It is premature if the home-market site has unresolved crawl, indexation or tracking problems. Fix those first.
- It is a poor fit if fulfilment, returns or payments for that country are not ready.
- Rankings in a new country take time; plan for months, not weeks.
What does international SEO cost?
Cost grows with the number of markets, languages, templates and products to localize.
How do we work with brands in other time zones?
Work is remote. Reporting is monthly with a shared dashboard, and the intro and discovery calls scope the first markets.
Questions we get asked
Can a Pakistani agency rank a site in the US or UK?
Rankings depend on the site, content and authority, not the location of the agency. The work must reflect each market's search behavior, which is why we research per country.
Do I need a separate site for each country?
Not usually. Subfolders on one domain are often easier to maintain. We advise after reviewing your setup.
What is hreflang?
Markup that tells Google which language or country version of a page to serve to which user.
Is translated content duplicate content?
Same-language versions for different countries, such as en-US and en-GB, are similar by nature. Hreflang and proper localization (currency, spelling, shipping) help search engines serve the right version.
Which markets do you cover?
US and UK are our focus for this service.
How long until we see results?
New markets typically need months. We set a baseline first and report by country.
Do you handle ads for international markets?
Yes. Our Rahman & Rahman work used geo-focused ad sets for UK cities.
What does it cost?
We scope pricing to your site and goals, so get in touch for a quote.
